Why Organic Cotton?
Conventionally grown cotton is not as pure and natural as some would suspect. Regular cotton consumes about 25% of the insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world. According to Patagonia, conventional cotton crops in California alone get dusted every year with 6.9 million pounds of chemicals. And research shows that extensive and intensive use of synthetic fertilizers, soil additives, defoliants and other substances destroy soil, water, air and many living things. Organic cotton, grown by farmers without harmful chemicals, is clearly the better alternative. Organic cotton farmers use methods to support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, improve the quality of soil and often use less water. Growing organically takes more time, requires more knowledge and skill.
